How to Fight Summer Humidity (and Win!)

Updated: Oct 23, 2023

Summers in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area are notorious for having high levels of humidity. While these aren’t the only areas in the U.S., our clients tell us regularly just how much of a battle it can be when it comes to their hair.

Do you suffer from bad hair days thanks to the humidity? We’re here to help! As experts in the field, as well as women who have also experienced humidity-caused hair issues, we are here to spill our secrets that keep our hair (and our clients hair) looking styled and fabulous all summer long.

Humidity doesn't have to ruin your hair with these simple tips

3 Pro Secrets to Handling Your Hair Against Humidity

1. Style with a purpose

If we all could wake up with effortless beach waves that we could wear long and down, blowing in the breeze like a runway model, we would. But that’s just not the case for most of us. Instead, in order to fight against humidity, you need to style your hair with purposeful intent to keep the flyaways and frizz at bay.

What we mean by this is selectively picking styles that will lay your hair more flat against your head. Braids, slicked back ponies, and even claw clip up-do’s are excellent options to fight against humidity-caused-frizz.

Additionally, utilizing your hair's natural oils to keep your hair down and matted will be your friend through the humid months. While you still want your hair to look clean and nice, allowing your 3rd-day oily hair to work with your style is our best tip. Pause on applying the dry shampoo (which typically soaks up oil and provides volume) and work that oil more into your hair, keeping it sleek and laying tight against your scalp.

Freshly washed hair? No problem! Apply a topical product to your clean hair to help it develop some texture and grip. Our favorite (used often in our salon) is The Flyaway Fix Stick by Goldilocks. This pomade stick is lightweight and keeps all those stray hairs away without weighing down your natural hair.

2. Get a Brazilian Blowout

Humidity tries to rid your hair of moisture and smoothness, which we will have none of! That’s why we always recommend one of our most popular summer services, a Brazilian blowout to control frizz and dryness.

Brazilian blowouts are humidity-proof. Unlike Keratin or other similar straightening services, this does not permanently alter the texture of your hair. Instead, it smoothes and makes your frizzy hair more manageable.

One of the biggest benefits to a Brazilian is that it cuts down your style time, typically by at least half, and allows you to rock a fabulously smooth and styled look on even the hottest and most humid days.

This treatment lasts up to 6 months and is great for all hair types. If you have curly hair, you are still able to get the best curl definition and a blowout will actually make managing your curls much easier. Straight hair clients will see an immediate change in the amount of flyways.

If you’re local, make sure to set an appointment with us for a Brazilian blowout and have a (hair) stress-free summer!

3. Start Attacking Frizz in the Shower

It may seem contradictory that your frizz problems could be addressed when your hair is fully wet from the shower. But actually, the right shampoo and conditioner can make a huge difference in your frizz game!

By using a smoothing shampoo and conditioner, plus leave-in, you can see a significant decrease in frizz when your hair is fully dry. Why is that? Because your hair is locking in more moisture and is less susceptible to the humid air drying it up.

We highly recommend the Velveteen Dream Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner by Ameka, that when used together, create beautifully smooth hair strands that fight perfectly against frizz. We also adore the Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Leave-in Conditioner, an added tool for anti-frizz.

Humidity does not have to be your enemy this summer! By following these simple tips, you can feel confident that your hair will last all day long amongst the heat. You got this!
